Hideyuki Okano received his degrees from Keio University (M.D. 1983, Ph.D. 1988). After a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins, he held professorships at Tsukuba University (1994) and Osaka University (1997) before returning to Keio University in 2001. He served as Dean of Keio University School of Medicine (2007–2021) and became a Visiting Professor at MIT in 2022. Currently, he is Director and Distinguished Professor at Keio Regenerative Medicine Research Center. His honors include the Medal with Purple Ribbon (2009), Erwin von Bälz Prize (2014), and Uehara Prize (2022). He is President of the Japanese Society for Regenerative Medicine and President-Elect of ISSCR, focusing on stem cell therapies for spinal cord injuries and iPSC-based modeling and drug development for ALS and Alzheimer’s disease.
