María del Mar Sánchez, PhD, is a postdoctoral researcher in the Llorente Lab at the Department of Neurosurgery (Stanford University), where she investigates stem cell-based strategies for spinal cord repair.
She earned her PhD in Biotechnology (Cum Laude) in February 2025 at the Research Centre Príncipe Felipe (CIPF) and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), supported by an FPI predoctoral grant. Under the supervision of Dr. Victoria Moreno and Dr. Esther Giraldo, her research focused on bioengineered stem cell-based approaches for spinal cord injury, including optogenetic modulation to enhance neuronal regeneration. She conducted part of her research at the Center for Neural Repair (UCSD) under Dr. Mark Tuszynski and Dr. Erna van Niekerk. She has co-authored four high-impact publications and participated in several international conferences.
