Leiden University Medical Center, Netherlands
I am professor in Bioethics and Health Law and pediatrician at Leiden University. I also chair the Centre for Ethics and Health - a partnership between the Dutch Health Council and the Council for Public Health & Society. I work as an ethicist in various committees and advisory boards, including The Central Committee on Research Involving Human Subject. My approach to healthcare and research is from a Global Health Ethics perspective. Within this perspective, significant roles are played by concepts like epistemic injustice, implicit bias, and othering. Through this lens, I address questions about the goals of healthcare, scarcity and how to achieve a genuinely fair distribution of care and health technology innovation, considering the needs of vulnerable populations, financial considerations and ecological sustainability.
