Dr. Wang Zhe is a Program-Specific Assistant Professor at Kyoto University. His research integrates developmental biology, stem cell biology, organoid technology, and bioengineering to study how stem cells self-organize into complex structures.
He developed a flexible hydrogel cell culture substrate that supports hPSC attachment while enabling spatial tuning of mechanical properties and micropatterning to control morphogenesis. His hydrogel-based system allows precise manipulation of physical and biochemical microenvironments, modeling key processes such as cell movement, morphogenesis, and primitive streak formation during human gastrulation. By integrating micropatterning and localized morphogen gradients, he explores how spatial and temporal control of mechanical and biochemical cues directs stem cell fate and tissue morphogenesis.
