Dr. Maria Giovanna Garone is a Human Frontier Science Program Postdoctoral Fellow at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. She is a neural stem-cell molecular biologist studying the central nervous system to investigate new therapies for neurological disorders. During her PhD in Life Sciences at the Sapienza University of Rome and University College London (UCL), she established a new method for obtaining functional spinal and cranial motoneurons from human induced pluripotent stem cells to investigate the role of RNA-binding proteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Currently, she is using her expertise in stem-cell biology and neuroscience to establish new 3D brain organoid models and a high-throughput drug screening platform to study neurodevelopment and find new treatments for neurological disorders and paediatric brain tumours.
