Ludi Zhang is an associate professor at Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. He received his undergraduate degree in biology at Xiamen University, China. He then completed his PhD and Postdoctoral research at Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cellular Biology. His research focuses on the generation of functional and expandable human hepatocytes and their clinical applications to treat liver failure. He converted human fibroblasts to hepatocyte-like cells (hiHep) by transdifferentiation and developed a bioartificial liver device implanted with clinical-grade hiHeps. He also developed a defined medium to expand primary human hepatocytes to a large quantity via dedifferentiation and established liver organoids derived from these proliferating human hepatocytes (ProliHH) for cell replacement therapy.
